Dr. Miles Bennell returns to his small California town and soon discovers that many residents exhibit strange, detached behavior. When his former patients claim their loved ones have been replaced by nearly identical impostors, Miles investigates the bizarre occurrences with the help of his girlfriend, Becky Driscoll.

As they piece together the mystery, Miles and Becky realize the town is under siege by alien spores that replicate people while erasing their emotions and individuality. With the population increasingly replaced by these alien duplicates, the two struggle to warn others before they become the next victims in the chilling transformation.
