Mr. Sardonicus (1961)
In 1880, Sir Robert Cargrave, a London doctor specializing in experimental paralysis treatments, receives a summons to the remote estate of Baron Sardonicus in Gorslava. The baron suffers from a grotesque facial disfigurement and demands Cargrave’s expertise to cure him. Complicating matters, the baron is now married to Maude, Cargrave’s former wife.
Upon arriving, Cargrave encounters the baron, who hides behind a mask and exerts a menacing control over his household. Sardonicus makes it clear that failure to heal him will result in harm to Maude, forcing Cargrave into a tense and unsettling situation where his medical skills are tested under dire circumstances.
