Rashomon (1950)

In a forest clearing near the Rashomon gate, a woodcutter, a priest, and a commoner seek shelter from a rainstorm. They soon discuss the disturbing case of a samurai’s murder and the assault of his wife, which has stirred the nearby village. Each sworn testimony presents a conflicting account of the events, told by the bandit Tajōmaru, the samurai’s wife, and the samurai himself through a medium.

As the four versions unfold, the trio must grapple with the contradictions and question the truth behind the crime. The varying perspectives reveal not just differing memories but the complexities of human nature and perception surrounding the samurai’s death and the wife’s ordeal.
