During the Great Depression, Natty Gann sets out on a challenging journey across the country to find her father, who has left home to find work. Along the way, she braves harsh landscapes and dangers that test her resilience and courage.

Natty is joined by a lone drifter and forms an unlikely alliance with a large protective wolf, both of whom help her navigate the difficult terrain and obstacles she encounters. Their travels highlight the struggles faced by many families torn apart during this difficult time in America.
