Up in Smoke (1978)

Two down-and-out stoners, Pedro De Pacas (Cheech Marin) and Anthony “Man” Stoner (Tommy Chong), meet by chance and embark on a wild adventure in Up in Smoke (1978). The duo unknowingly smuggles a van made entirely of marijuana from Mexico to Los Angeles while being pursued by inept law enforcement. Along the way, they get into a series of comedic misadventures, from attending a chaotic battle of the bands competition to evading the authorities in the most absurd ways possible. With Pedro and Man’s constant haze of marijuana use, the film serves up endless slapstick humor and iconic one-liners, creating a stoner-comedy classic that resonated with counterculture audiences of the 1970s.

Known for launching the comedy careers of Cheech and Chong, this film was a trailblazer for the “stoner” genre and is filled with irreverent humor and satirical takes on drug culture. Despite initial controversy, Up in Smoke became a cult hit, making it a defining movie of its time.
