John “Scottie” Ferguson, a retired San Francisco detective plagued by acrophobia, is hired to follow Madeleine Elster, the mysterious wife of an old friend. As Scottie delves deeper into Madeleine’s actions, his obsession grows, complicating his efforts to uncover the truth. The story centers on his struggle with fear and desire amidst a web of intrigue surrounding the woman he is drawn to.
