A team of astronauts is tasked with a long-term mission to locate and detonate unstable planets before they pose a threat to other worlds. As their journey stretches into its twentieth year aboard the spaceship Dark Star, the crew contends with the frustrations and oddities of deep space. Their alien mascot, a small but troublesome creature, often causes unexpected disruptions, complicating life aboard the vessel.

Complicating matters further is an intelligent, self-aware bomb designed for planetary destruction, which begins to question its purpose and existence. This philosophical device challenges the crew’s control and tests their patience as they navigate isolation and the peculiar challenges of their assignment. Crew members such as Sgt. Pinback and Lt. Doolittle grapple with maintaining order while facing both technical and existential dilemmas in the vastness of space.
