Good Bye Lenin! (2003)
After his mother awakens from a coma, Alex faces a delicate challenge. She has been unconscious during a critical time in East German history, including the fall of the Berlin Wall. As a devoted supporter of the old communist regime, she must be protected from learning about the dramatic political changes that have taken place, as any shock could endanger her fragile health.
To keep her insulated from the new reality, Alex constructs an elaborate illusion, recreating familiar sights and news from the former East Germany within their apartment. His efforts involve careful manipulation of information and cooperation from friends and family, all set against the shifting landscape of a reunified Berlin. The tension between truth and illusion drives the effort to shield his mother while maintaining a life amid rapid social upheaval.
